. a combination of tax increases exami and spending cuts and could push the u.s. economy into a recession as all eyes are on how that develops. here in japan, too, the nikkei was down 3.75% last week, so we saw that play into the markets as well. the gdp figure is coming at 0.9% for the july-to-september period. we'll see how that is translating into the opening levels. let's go to the opening levels for the nikkei and topix for many monday, november 12th. both indices are down by half a percent there. the nikkei closed out last week at a four-week low as the yen gained against the dollar and euro. the japanese currency rose. really investors shifting money into yen-based assets and the higher yen weighing on export issues. this is at a time when many japanese corporations are releasing poor earnings over the last couple of weeks. that's all most of that based on the strong yen. don't forget europe, we can't ignore that sector and economy either. the renewed concerns about greece despite pushing through an austerity plan. that's a big focus as well, how that plays into stock markets. >> how are

soared on cyber monday. and all bets are off. prediction market entrade says it can no longer accept u.s. customers as market regulators say its trades aren't legal. shanghai composite closed below 2,000 for the first time in three years. it comes at a time when plenty have been talking up chinese growth prospects for next year. so we'll get into that more later. but 1991 is the closing level. this the main one to watch across asia. the nikkei did manage to continue it rally adding about 0.4% as the yen weakens on comments this morning. forex, the dollar-yen one to watch, 82.19 is the level there. the aussie dollar doing a little bit abouter despite that weak number on the shanghai composite. sterling is flat. we'll get into that more later. and euro-dollar just barely higher today, we did see it rallying over the 1.30 mark last night. as we look at crude rallying adding a third of a percent. brent about a quarter of a percent. copper, we're adding 0.2%. 354 bucks on that contract. the real foe you can as we continue to examine whether china's economy is fundamentally hanging in there, c

after good gains yesterday. following strong moves in the u.s., as well. cac 40 down half a percent. weighed town by the moody's downgrade, although expected. and ibex done around 0.4%. french debt market, yields are up to 2.1%. treasuries slightly higher, but still below 6%. ten year bund yields slightly lower. so france is trading with the peripheral in that sense. euro-dollar, 1.2794 is where we stand, dipping slightly on on the back of the french downgrade. dollar-yen 81.26, but the yen has been down at acceseven mont lows. aussie dollar slightly weaker against the u.s. dollar. rba minutes suggesting that their policymakers consider further monetary easing may be appropriate. still to come, we'll be in athens and brussels. euro group reportedly close to signing off on the next tranche aid. i always wait until the last minute. can i still ship a gift in time for christmas? yeah, sure you can. great. where's your gift? uh... whew. is on assignment tonight. a repeated warning to washington-- if the u.s. goes over the fiscal cliff, it would push the economy into a recession. and late today, a top credit rating agency puts the odds of going off the cliff at 15%. plus, how g.o.p. economic policies could change as election day demographics change. that and more tonight on nbr! the u.s. economy would be driven into recession next year if the fiscal cliff is not solved in time. that's the warning again today from the congressional budget office. and the standard and poor's ratings agency said there's an increasing chance we will go over that cliff of tax increases and spending cuts. it puts the odds at 15%. still, s&p is optimistic about a solution, saying "the most likely scenario, in our view, is that policymakers reach sufficient political compromise in time to avoid most, if not all, potential economic effects of the cliff." both s&p and the congressional budget office warned unemployment would go over 9% by the end of next year if the cliff is triggered. those s&p comments hit the market in the last 30 minutes of trading, ext

on december 7th. they priced the range at the moment of their indicative range. it will be a 3.1 u.s. billion dollar ipo and that would be hong kong's largest in about two years. looking at some of the other markets, the kospi finished with somes losses down 0.1%. asx finishing up 0.6%. let's get over to the november performances because it was a pretty good showing for the month. nikkei of course the outperformer. kelly mentioned the yen. it has been weakening against the u.s. dollar and that has been providing a lot of support. also directly related to politics in japan. this has been in focus over the last month or so. opposition leader expected to be the next prime minister when the country votes. so he has been talking about a lot of aggressive monetary easing and talking about an inflation target of about 2%. so stocks have really been on a roll. the kospi finishing up with just about 1.1% gain in november. we have the asx finishing just slightly lower about a quarter of a percent. and the hang seng continues to win finishing i believe a third month of gains up 1.8% in the month of nove
